The total time of the abhijit muhurtha is  48 minutes.(Exactly one gati-Nazhigai) 24 minutes before and after the mid day Sun  is called the abhijit muhurat. Basically it stays up to 48 minutes but the duration may reduce if the day is shorter according to the Sun rise time and set time based on the tamil month rasi mana As the abhijit muhurtha is auspicious people opt for this muhuratha  to perform their work. Abhijit muhurtha safe guards a work even if the day is inauspicious. You can see nowdays the ploticians taking oath at this time. 

This abhijit Muhurtha is best for everything except for Upanayanam and Marriage.  At this 48 Minutes they Sun rays will fall the natives Rasi, Lagnam, and in the 10^th house in which the Sun will give full energy to the native to have all the vitality strength  to get all the prospects in their ventures.

Peoples are confusing themselves between Abijit Muhurtha and Abijit Nakshathra.  Both are entirely difference.  Abhijit Nakshathra in vedic astrology is mixing of two nakshathra  i.e. Uthradam 3 and fourth patha and Thiruvonam 1^st and 2^nd patham. This combination is also a good day for doing good things.  This is the 28^th Nakshathra in Vedic astrology and today it is vanished
